Vintage Rollag Pictures

Those are great Ned. Keep them coming. I am glad those have survived and found their way to someone who cares. Too often stuff like slides get thrown out.

Great pictures Ned... Thanks for sharing, and for bumping up an old thread I had forgotten about! We (forum) have been around a while, looking at the date Brian started the thread, way back on '07!

Ned

The Gaar Scott Is still under construction in that pict. and the Huber I think is a 20Hp that was at the early shows. If it is that one it was a Nelson engine but not NB's. I will have to look in one of my old books to look up who's. Great photos!

The Huber that is pictured was owned by my great uncle Helmer Nelson and was sold at an auction back in the late 60's - before I knew enough words to tell my father to buy it. The engine I believe went to Iowa.
The Nicholson Shepard was also owned by Helmer Nelson this one was also sold at the same auction and is still in Minnesota in a museum. Helmer had driven the Nicholson Shepard home to Rollag from about 15 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes. I believe that it is the late John Neprud at the steering wheel as he spent a fair amount of time on the engine while it was at the show.

Looking closer at the picture of the Huber I would say that it is Monrud Nelson operating. Monrud is the grandfather of Peter Nelson and the great-grandfather of Sean Nelson. Monrud was a brother of Helmer

Thanks Brian for identifying Monrad. The multi generational steam obsession continues this year with both my girls attending the University of Rollag.

Well it has been a couple months since any activity on this thread. I found a few more from the 1970 show that I have gotten scanned from my dads old slides and thought I would share.

This first one is pretty good shot of the Advance in miniature land

Is anyone identifiable in there?

Here is another from miniature land. Anyone know the two kids with the Oil Pull?

I am very curious about the steamer in the lower right hand corner. It looks like it has been around a while, even in 1970.

I will see about posting a couple more later tonight.

I know this is an old thread but I guess I never looked at it too close before now. The question was asked about the kids running Elmers Rumely. A reply said one is Tom Jungst. Which is true. I'm surprised the other kid isn't me as Tom and I played with this engine a lot. If this picture is from 1970 then the other kid I believe is Jared Colter. I could be wrong. I think that fall after the show his sister fell off the back of a truck into a fire of burning leaves. The family was doing fall clean up. That almost spelled disaster for the show. One of the reasons so much emphasis is put on safety at the show...

In the picture of the little steamer, I believe the angle is toward the west. If the photo had been taken slightly more to the right you should have been able to see our display of engines. 1970 was the last year we displayed there as we built the first part of our building in the summer of 1971 and were running in there for showtime.

One other thing I just noticed in that picture... There is an old light blue Dodge pickup in the background. If I am not mistaken, that truck was owned by the late Norman Pross? I only know this because Rick Halldorson eventually ended up with that pickup and he called it Norman.

Am I correct Jeff? Anyone else know?

So, as I study the picture a little more I realize I am wrong about the direction of the little steamer picture. It is still looking to the north slightly moved to the right of the little OilPull picture. That's the area where the Case eagle and the memorial are now. You might be right about the pickup Mark but Norman never spent a lot of time up in the trees. He was usually around the big tractors. I do notice that there are a quite a few vehicles parked in the trees. I am so glad they tried to put a stop to that however there are a few starting to creep back into the area the last few years. I wish I knew how to stop that. Display space is so very precious in that area to be taken up by a car or pickup. The visitors really like being in the trees.

This forum is such a great idea!!!
We've scanned in some old pictures from some early shows at Rollag.
I'm going to post one at a time.
This picture is of the Nichols & Sheppard going up the Hill during the parade through the people. I would say that this picture is taken in the area where the main water tank is located.
:)

Just a note I recently came into a pile of slides from the 1980 show. So hopefully within the next couple weeks I can get them onto a disk of zip drive and post them on here!!

Looking forward to this! It would have been my 3rd show!

Hey Ned... Going back through this thread I see that your posts #'s 36 - 40 or something in that range have fallen victim to the Photobucket BS!

(I really can't express here how disappointed I am with that company for doing what they did to all of us!)

Any chance you can go to your PB page and get those pictures that are supposed to be there? If you can figure out from the descriptions which pictures you had in those posts, I will make sure you can repost them here, with the local hosting we use now... in place where they should be, just like they never were missing.

You contribute so much here... we need to try to restore your work.

Same goes for anyone else in this predicament who wants to restore a thread. Get the pictures and we'll make it happen!
