    Leslie Hilde
    1925 - 2019
Leslie W. Hilde, age 93, of Fargo, ND, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2019, at Bethany on University, Fargo.

Leslie Willis Hilde was born on July 17, 1925, to Melvin and Myrtle (Wang) Hilde at home on a farm near Ulen, MN. Leslie was baptized and confirmed in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen. After his mother’s death at a very young age, he helped with chores, farming, and caring for his younger brothers: Victor, David, and Donald. He attended school in Ulen where he graduated with the Class of 1943. Leslie volunteered for the United States Navy and was inducted as an Apprentice Seaman on May 13, 1944, during WWII. He was stationed in Ulithi Atoll of the Western Caroline Islands in the South Pacific before receiving his honorable discharge as a Petty Officer on December 8, 1946. He used his GI Bill to attend the University of Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture. Leslie was united in marriage to Merna Anderson on November 11, 1949 in Minneapolis, MN. The couple was blessed with four children: Patricia, Susan, Robert, and Steven. Leslie taught Veterans’ Agriculture classes and worked as a salesman for agricultural products for several years before becoming the manager of a fertilizer plant in the Dilworth area for many years. Leslie and Merna lived in the Rollag/Pelican Lake area for over 40 years before moving to Fargo, ND. Leslie and Merna made their home at Bethany on University where they have made some great friendships with the residents and staff.

Leslie took great pride in his military service and was grateful to live in the United States of America! He was also an active member of the Western Minnesota Steam Thresher’s for many years. He fulfilled his dream of driving the 1929 Model 22-36 McCormick Deering tractor that has been in the Hilde family for 79 years in the parades at Rollag in 1998. Leslie and Merna loved to travel and camped in nearly all 50 states including Alaska. In 2000, Leslie took his dream trip to the village of his ancestors, Fla, Norway along with 18 other Hilde’s. Leslie had a strong faith and was a member of the Rollag Lutheran Church since 1966. His sense of humor and charming personality will be dearly missed.

Leslie is survived by his wife of 69 years, Merna; his daughters, Patricia Hilde and Susan Hilde; his sons, Bob Hilde and Steve (Carolyn) Hilde; four grandsons: Kevin and Brian Bruce, Andrew and Alex Hilde; one granddaughter, Julie Bruce; two great-grandsons, Carter and Connor Bruce; his brothers, David (Lori) Hilde and Donald Hilde; his uncle, Vernon Wang; as well as many extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Irene; his sister-in-law, Kaye; and numerous aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday, April 18 at the Bethany on University Chapel. A time of gathering will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at Rollag Lutheran Church.
