Forum Updates

After some long delay, mostly related to technical issues, and spending all our free time at the Hill, I'll be upgrading the Forum within the next week or so.

I'll post an update closer to when I know it will happen, as I have to coordinate a few schedules to get everything updated in the right order.

What does this mean? - It means that when I do the upgrade, you'll see a message stating the forum is down, or you may see a funny error message if it's in the final stages of updating/configuration.

When it comes back up, all the posts, pictures etc will be there. There will be some further mods to do to place the logo back at the top, embed the youtube videos from the older version, etc, and change the default 'look and feel' to be more like it is now.

I have already gone thru a sample 'upgrade' and it went pretty well, so I don't expect anything huge to appear *knock on wood*

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

I've got a test site setup with current data for the upgrade to happen! I need to coordinate with Stephen (the host) to make the website name updates.

There will be some period of downtime while this change happens, and then some adjustment period while I re-configure the settings (header, colors, look, etc) as those things are not able to be migrated over to the new version.

Please bear with us as we get these updates done. No posts are going away or anything, the layout of the newer version is just a little different, but all of the photos, and comments will be retained!

OK - Third time is the charm.

Now that I'm actually home for a Friday, I've coordinated with the host to get things moved over to the new version of the forum this weekend. If you see an downtime message, or have difficulty accessing the site, this would be due to the upgrade, and please check back after a bit.

I will still have some tweaks to adjust for the layout, top image etc, but as a whole, the posts, comments, photos will all remain in tact!

Hello and good morning.

I have upgrade the forum to the most recent version of the software that powers our Forum. With this, I'm certain you have noticed the many visual changes. I am going to be going thru over the near future to get the header aligned properly (and add in a rotating banner hopefully) as well as the other buttons for the local weather, main website and online store.

A few new things here to note, especially for those that post video and photos. In the new Post tool, you'll see a completely redesigned (and greatly improved) editor. There are now FAR MORE video hosts supported out of the box, without Mark laboring to find creative ways to make YouTube work. :aetsch:.

If you want to add a photo or video, you can simply click the icons above, that look like a photo, or a film strip, for photo and video respectively. You can also include videos from Facebook now too!. There is also a big camera icon on the upper left of this editor where you can upload or use existing hosted images.

If you don't see this great new toolbar, you should have a few icons i the upper right of this window, for uploading attachments, the 'advanced toolbox, and the beloved smileys which I ported over from the old version too.

Another neat option, for mobile users is the ability to use a third party app, called ForumRunning. This is free, or very inexpensive depending on what type of mobile device/tablet you use. I have it on my iPad, and it's a very simple way to simply view posts. You can read, respond, etc from this tool. You can search for us under WMSTR, and login with your regular username/password for the forum.

Otherwise, the usability of the new site should be very similar, aside from the visual differences. I know this was supposed to get done some time ago, however with the busy summer, coordination with the host and working out a number of bugs making such a large leap in versions (2 major version upgrades, and countless minor upgrades in-between) slowed us down. In the end, it was great, because short of a few configuration items last night boggling me, the actual 'upgrade' process went flawless using the most recent release!

Please feel free to ask us Mods (or me until the others get in a poke around a bit) if you've got any questions!

Again, thanks to the other Mods that started this up some time ago and have kept it up (Rick, Vern, Mark) for letting me handle the updates, and thanks to Stephen at KVC, for the hosting help!

Looking good! Had to clear the web history on my phone to let me log in, besides that it has been fine for me so far. I'm sure I will blindly stumble around for a bit to get my bearings again...

Wow! What an update. Now can you get me reauthorized to see the members only area?

Hi Don, and anyone else. I think Mike may have figured out the trick by emptying your browser cache. If a password needs to be reset, I believe you can do that if you get a failed login. Otherwise, feel free to send a screenshot with your error logging into [email protected]!

With my login before I cleared my cache, it would just go back to the regular site (as if I was a visitor). Hope it helps

Why with this update can visitors view every photo in every library in photobucket? This doesn't seem very safe am I wrong? What happen to letting people see just the photo posted here?

Hey Ned,

Only for unregistered users is this happening. I am submitted a bug ticket to get a fix for this ASAP!
