Winter wood cutting?

Are there plans for a wood cutting event this winter? Want to make sure to get it on the calendar if so. Have 2-cycle gas I'd rather burn in the saw than on a campfire...

Hi Rick,

You have asked a good question, but did you have to use the 'w' word so early? Maybe we can say fall wood cutting and try to pretend the other word won't happen for a while.

I suspect some folks have talked about this all ready. Let's hope the word gets shared here so lots of us can plan to attend.

Just got word that the fall woodcutting will be November 23rd. :thumb: Bring your saws and splitters!

Just bringing this up again incase people are wondering about wood cutting.
If you have a saw or splitter please bring it we usually end up with more of one than the other but it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
For those that don't have either of those items but want to help remember to dress warmly no flip flops or shorts!!

There are many trees needing to be cut up, which have fallen on the grounds from the heavy wet snow we recieved back in October.
The main area is Snob Hill (where the tree swing is located), down in the (what I call) Valley Campground (along the main campground road), and in front of the Main Street wagon shed.
There are many smaller limbs and branches all over the grounds needing pick up.
I'll post some photos later today.
(Personally, with my ongoing extensor tendinitis in my right hand, not sure what I can help with).

Karl can you mark those trees with paint or ribbon? So we can maybe send a crew that way

Ned, most the trees are down or are clinging to the parent tree while broke at an angle off from the parent tree and to the ground, hanging on with great hope. Lol.

It's very easy to see the needed cutting of downed trees.
No pics tonight. (To large of files problem. I need to reduce them and then I can add here in this post).

So life happens.especially at this time (missing a galss Lense from my glasses and hard to see). I apogoze for not getting pctiures posted. I'll try on my lsptop snd see what I can do. Guys, this really sucks not being able to see. ha ha ha ha .

Hi all,

Has a show up time and/or a start time been picked?
I would hate to get to the Hill at 5:30am and have to take a nap for 3 hours ;)...

I hope to see a good group tomorrow.

Hi all,

What a great day for cutting wood. I got to the show grounds about 8:30 and this is what I found.

I figured this was going to be a short day and I would be home be noon. I don't remember who drove the John Deere up. There were only two pickups parked by the TMB. I didn't have anything better to do, so I got my chain saw out and started cutting the logs in the pile.

The next time I took a picture, it was a bit after 9:00

As you can see, the crowd had picked up quite a bit. Louie brought a box of doughnuts.

If you look through the mast of the forklift, you can see a white pickup pulling a trailer. It looks like a skid steer loader on the back. What is that on the front?

I don't know where the scale model steam engine went, it didn't come over to play.

The trailer of wood is one of several that showed up. I hope someone that knows where the wood came from will let us know.

The log splitter on the front of the skid steer has been here before. He used it to split some of the real big pieces into small enough pieces that the crew running the splitter behind the John Deere could handle them. Also not the line up of tote in the back ground. Most of the totes were empty or just had a few pieces of wood in them when we started.

This picture shows the stuff the splitter on the skidder was working on. What is that entering the picture on the right?

Jane bought a new toy for Clayton to play with. That my friends is a 600 Bobcat powered by a V4 Wisconsin engine. I am a bit jealous, my Bobcat is only a 500.

I ran the WMSTR Bobcat for a while. This is the view I had for part of the day.

I was holding a log up for Ryan U so he didn't have to bend over so far and didn't have to worry about getting the chain in the dirt.

Another picture taken out of the side of the Bobcat.

The last picture that I took. I turned just a bit to the north.

Notice the red Honda generator. A fellow used that to power his electric chain saw. That was a lot quieter than the gas saws.

A crew was working over by the wood bunker. I didn't get a picture of them.

A little after 2:00pm we headed to Ellis A's garage for some dinner.
Thanks to everyone for the work, thanks to Ellis for serving food in his garage and thanks to the crew that made the food and served us.

Well Jerry I will disagree with you on your time. The thick and thin was hard at work at 8:30 cutting slab wood down at the mill. But we were out of sight so no one would of known that.

Picture is a bit dark but it was Craig, Josh, Jane, niece Amy, and myself.
We filled the totes we had and then and got four more and took them down to the circle. When we finished we went to the circle and helped there the rest of the day.

This was a lot easier to do now then when it is 80 degrees out.

Kelly M, my father Jeff and I buzzed up a few piles of slabwood over by the coal bunker, and then later on split wood (looked like it was cut last year) that was in the middle of the wood pile. I just got this '40 B at an auction a few weeks back - it'll be kept at Rollag now, for exactly this kind of use. -Colt

Colt and Clayton,

I didn't realize we had two 'new' pieces of equipment on the grounds Saturday.

When I first saw Clayton's Bobcat I was wasn't close enough to see who was driving. It wasn't until Clayton brought it to the Steam Engine Cul-de-sac that I recognized the driver.

I was in and out of the coal bunker area a couple time with totes and saw the crew with the buzz saw. I didn't realize that the tractor was Colt's new one.

The fact that I didn't know a crew was working at the Thick and Thin reinforces something I have learned about summer weekends at the Hill. Be careful saying, "No one is on the grounds working." If you don't drive around and check carefully, you have no idea how many people are on the grounds.

I know some crews were cutting trees when I got there. I saw the crew at the coal bunker area. Now I know a crew was at the Thick and Thin. How many other crews were working in different locations on the grounds?

I was going to pull the C-saw out of the shed but after seeing Nelson's 2 Case's with buzz saws and the new JD buzz saw tractor figured we didn't need a 4th one out. Nice looking tractor Colt!
Most of the damaged trees on snob hill were taken care of by a small crew. FYI there's still some bigger logs by the 4way intersection if someone wants to haul them to the circle.
There was some talk about another wood splitting/cutting party memorial day weekend more to come on that when it gets closer.
Thanks to all that came out
