I hope I didn't scare anyone with that title but another month and we have another donut day /work weekend and with valentine's Day fast approaching you have a chance to get an 8x10 portrait suitable for framing of you and your favourite circular pastry just something to keep in mind if you need a valentine's Day gift for your significant other I could go on and on here but I won't there are a few projects for this weekend the tender for the partner railroad the dust buster boiler for merry go round is repaired need to put hand holes plugs and test to name a few of course the usual amount of useless and sometimes questionable information being traded from past experience I know some of these stories really stretch the limits
Pretty sure Chef Jerry is cooking again So if you are unemployed this Saturday stop by Larson Welding and pitch in its almost as good as sitting around a campfire Hope to see you there

Just found out today Chef Jerry had a prior commitment so he will be unable to cook on Saturday scrambling to find a replacement I thought of Chef Klinger he said he would gladly serve his favourite menu which is called Norwegian taco's for those of familiar with this delicacy it consists of lutefisk and pickled herring wrapped up in a peice of lefsa quite tasty he says but I didn't want to scare anyone away so we will fall back on our old standard pizza

Hi Louie,

Are you sure you got the title of the thread correct?
I hope to be there broight and early, thanks for the reminder.

We have another change of plans for lunch Kelly of Casey Joe's catering fame is going to cook lunch for us

I wasn’t even on the fence before, totally committed to come, and now with the confirmation of catered lunch………….just try to keep me away! Really looking forward to the work weekend, hoping to finish up the machine work on the Ortner trucks. We’ve really had a great run this winter getting the projects moved along, what a gift to be able to do all this maintenance work at Larson Welding. See ya tomorrow!

Louie was right, there were men working last weekend. Here are a few photos.
The boiler for the Merry Go Round was back in again

IMG_4318.JPG

Ned was busy looking for something. I don't remember what. Hopefully he will bring us up to speed.
IMG_4317.JPG

Help showed up. Several studs needed to be removed. After heating the studs a time or two and letting them cool, they turned out.
IMG_4332.JPG

If you look closely, you can see the holes the studs were in.
IMG_4339.JPG

Another shot of the crew working. The new smoke box (is that the correct name for the metal work installed on the right end of the boiler?) is in place. Pat, thanks for saving the camera.
IMG_4346.JPG

The new studs and clamps are holding the new smoke box in place. Notice the stinger coming in on the left. The crew is tacking the smoke box together.
IMG_4348.JPG

The last picture of the project I took on Saturday. Most of the clamps are gone and evidence of welds can be seen. I hope someone that was working on the project will share more about the day and what is left to do.

More to come,
Jerry Christiansen

Jerry, I've seen the collection system between the boiler and the stack called "the breach" or "the breaching". That's what I'd say the correct terms would be. Seems "smokebox" isn't bad either. Now you've gotten absolutely nothing of use out of me.

Jerry the pic of me digging through the ash at the back end or front end depending on how you want to look at it?? I was searching for the hand holes plates we were going to pressure test the boiler but after a fruitless search and even sending Howie into the fire tube for the missing hand holes we came to the conclusion that the hand hole plates were still out at the show grounds. I have a picture that I'll post on here later of the completed smoke box or breach or breaching or front or back or whatever you want to call the part that we were working on.
Long story short this piece of the show is about ready to go back in to service providing power for the merry go round!!!

Ned,

Thanks for the info about your work.

A crew was back working on the Ortner tender.
The trucks came back in.
IMG_4322.JPG

Ray had guidance at the lathe again this weekend.
IMG_4334.JPG
Adain coached Ray. I am not sure if this task was competed or not.

Knute worked on the trucks.IMG_4336.JPG

The rest of the tender got some attention, too.
IMG_4323.JPG
Nope, not a train wreck. It was upside down to be worked on. The shiny metal is the new bottom that was welded in.

A close up of the bottom.
IMG_4324.JPG
It may not be easy to tell, the metal on the lower, right side is new metal that was welded in. Notice the bead of caulk on the edge.

The in-charge people planning the next step.
IMG_4333.JPG

The tank got a sealant installed.
IMG_4340.JPG

A couple quarts of sealant were poured in the tank. The four guys (one on each corner) tipped the tank different directions to get the sealant spread evenly across the bottom and a couple inches up on each side. Kerry (in the middle on the opposite side) looked inside the tank to watch the progress and instruct the tippers what to do.

IMG_4342.JPG
Another view of the tipping. Kerry has a flash light so he can see inside. If you ever use this sealant product, be sure you work in a well ventilated area and no one is smoking.

IMG_4343.JPG

The tender was left in the up right position until the sealant cured. Later the tender tipped upside down so the running gear and plumbing could be hooked up. Kenneth is heating a hose to soften it so it would slide on easier.

Have been working on repairing the transmission for the shows pay loader. I have been bad at getting pictures but this Saturday Louie, Wimpy, Jane and myself made some good progress.20180217_153603.jpg
This is the shaft that needed to get changed due to it stripping the splines out of itself.

20180213_164544.jpg
Part of the torque converter taken out of the transmission.

20180217_153448.jpg
Sorry but the cover got put back on before I got a picture of the inside of it. Waiting on a seal and then I can get the converter put back together and then it will be ready to install back into the loader on the next work weekend at Larson welding.
Before we started another project it was lunch time. Work weekends are nothing unless you can eat!!!20180217_122713.jpg
After some good soup and a sandwich, and a lot of 'manure talk' we moved on to the sawmill project.

Here's the finished smoke box

Hi Ned,

Thanks for posting the finished product. Having the Merry Go Round running higher pressure will be great! I bet it will fire better with the new metal added to the smoke/fire box. Thanks to the crew that took care of that.

I only got one picture of this project.

IMG_4335.JPG
We are lucky that brothers Jeff and Gary take care of the show's 1/2 scale Case steam engine. They took the engine home with them last fall and planned to tighten up all the linkage. They brought the cylinder/steam chest to Jim's to check it out. I believe they did some work to get the surfaces for the valve to seal better.

A small crew worked on project at the iron worker for a bit.
IMG_4328.JPG
It isn't easy to see, Charlie is on the left with his back to us. He is picking up some 8.75" wide, 48" long strips of aluminum to feed them into the iron worker. Adain is on the right, the younger fellow in the blue jacket, and is taking a piece of aluminum from his dad.

IMG_4329.JPG
Another view of the same crew. These are the strips of aluminum the round souvenir plates are made from. Some times we get a strip that is too hard for us to get a good impression. We have gotten smart enough to look at the first impression, if the impression isn't good enough we set the strip aside. This crew was using the iron worker to clip off the bad impressions, you can see one square of aluminum on the floor. Gary N uses these strips that are too hard for us to make the WMSTR license plates.

Clayton L was back with sawmill parts.
IMG_4327.JPG
This is a small section of the chain he is using to make the green chain for the Thick and Thin Sawmill. Clayton has another thread on the Forum showing more of that work.
IMG_4349.JPG
This shows the early stages of making bearing supports for the shafts that will drive the green chain.

Jerry, seen your posts, and wanted to inform the world we've finished the trucks! Thanks again to Jim and Lynette for the use of the shop, Adain for teaching me some things about machining (anytime I explain something I learn a little too), Knut for doing the dirty work on the trucks, Louie for the donuts, Markel for the lunch, and you for reminding us for what we got done!

Hi again all,
I looked back at the pictures from the weekend and realized I missed one project. The new Thirst Quencher (TQ) was back in along with the old TQ chassis.

IMG_4319.JPG
Another picture of the new,
IMG_4320.JPG
With the old right behind it.

IMG_4338.JPG
This guy working on the new TQ is hard to get in a picture. He can duck quicker than a dandelion in front of a lawn mower. Maybe we should have a contest and see who can guess the identity of this person.

IMG_4350.JPG
Another worker on the new TQ. This one might be easier to identify. I hope someone will explain all that happened on the new truck.

The crew working on the old TQ was a bit different.
IMG_4331.JPG
These guys would make car strippers in a chop shop look like amateurs. Anything of value to the show was taken off the old truck.

IMG_4344.JPG

A couple more strippers in action.

I am sure I missed a few people in the shop that day. The next work weekend should be March 10. Stay tuned for more info.

Later,
Jerry Christiansen

Got the torque converter seal installed and worked on putting the rest together.

20180227_163654.jpg

20180227_163823.jpg

20180213_164537.jpg

Did not get the last picture of the assembly of the converter but almost all together.

20180227_165859.jpg
Finished product and ready for the team to put back into the loader, will be much easier since it is all washed off and I was told the loader itself will get a bath also for easier assembly.
