Well one more of the many projects at the Historical Restorations shop. This engine was purchased from Bill Rudicill and delivered to the show grounds during Steam school 2016. It is a D6100 Caterpillar three cylinder diesel engine with pony start. About 1933 -1935 vintage.

This is another one that there is very little available for parts :(.... It has some issues that will make it a multi year project. The cat V8 I did was very challenging but this 3 cylinder with be all of that and a little more due to nothing being available for it. I took it on thinking 5 less cylinders, this will be much quicker and easier:rof:.

This is what I found when I took the head off last weekend.... # 2 cylinder had a lot of moisture in it at one time, And yes the engine is stuck but this tells me the bottom end should not be the issue for it being stuck.

Not sure what is going on here, Put some penetrating oil in the cylinder after using a wire wheel on all the rust. Broke free fairly easy, but something is not right due to it stopping solidly in both directions after about 90 degrees each way. Took the lifters out and made sure that was not stopping it. Next will be to drop the oil pan to take a look. That needs to come off anyway.

It looks like the pony exhaust goes through the diesel head to warm it up for starting???

Any idea about it's past life Clayton? Belt drove something from the looks of it!

Good to see you on Bob!

Yes Mark, the exhaust goes through the intake on the diesel to help warm up the intake air. This is plumbed through it in a pipe. I have talked to Bill about so many different things, but I believe he picked this unit up from a western state. I am not sure what it had run in its early life.

If you have never heard a 3 cylinder cat run before, you will think it is really neat. They have a very distinct sound to them. The early RD6 had the later version of this engine with the 5 and 3/4 bore and was also the three cylinder. This engine has the 5 and 1/4 bore by 8 inch stroke.

Clayton, have you figured out what is holding up the crank rotation yet? Hope it isn't too serious.

Have not got back to it, Been busy with parents and Christmas stuff and work has been nuts. Then came MOOSE, we got a dog , another Rottweiler. Perfect size I do not have to bend over to Pet him!!!! pictures to come later, I do not have them on the lap top yet. Was going to get back at it this weekend but then the car took that spot :(...

Hi Clayton,

Thanks for sharing the updates on the engine and the new tech that will be working with you in the shop.

I notice that the Vikings game was on when he was sitting on your lap. Was he cheering for or against the Vikings?

Later,

Got to do a little work on the engine today. Removed the fuel pump ass. and now the crank turns over. I guess the pump will need to be disassemble and cleaned up. It is quite rusty inside so I guess the lifters and plungers were holding it from turning it over.IMG_20161224_125148888.jpg

Here you will see the fuel assembly removed.

Glad to hear it wasn't something more serious. Hopefully the pump doesn't give you fits!
