Just recieved word that Don Tesker from Saukville Wisconsin passed away this morning at his home (07/15). Funeral arrangements are pending.
Donald was an active member of the show for many years. Don was the man in charge of the Visitor's Campground for many many years. He would bring all of his own equipment to run the visitor's campground. Some years he would have 3 John Deere gators, a utility tractor and his famous 720 John Deere ready to pull a camper in or out of the campground.
Don will be deeply missed by many. I personally will miss him very much. I worked side by side with Don many years back in the campground. We have many fond memories.
One story that comes to mind is of Don and his pipe. The world stopped if and when he ever lost that pipe. I remember one early evening in the campground, Don had lost his pipe in the overflow campground ( it was wheat stubble field). We were a little busy parking campers at the time and I remember he called me back there on the radio - the sound in his voice made it sound as a real emergency. I remember as I was getting back there he was calling in the Deputies to help with the "emergency" - I was looking around for someone that was injured. The local deputies showed up and they asked what was wrong - All Don said was " I lost my pipe and it is around here somewhere" - the Deputies knew Don well and they knew how much of an emergency this really was. We found the pipe shortly after and the campground was back up and running smoothly as ever..
Another time was Don asked me to fill one of the gators up with gas... as usual I got a little busy and kind of forgot to fill it up. I remember about 8:00 Don called me on the radio and asked if I had the gator - I said no - he said it was not where he left it. It turned out that someone (we still don't know) had taken the gator for a little joy ride. We had alot of people looking for that gator that evening. It was eventually found north of the Horse area abandoned in a ditch. Don never let me forget about my "forgetfullness" for if the gator was full of gas, we may have never seen it again.
Don enjoyed that Visitor's campgound alot. Don owned a large manufacturing company and he would take at least 2 weeks off every year just to come to Rollag - some years some of he employees would come up and help before the show. During the show Don would be tied to the Campground - except for his occasional triple-scoop of butterbrickle icecream cone run.
The past few years Don spent alot of time on the water truck - this is another job he enjoyed. I'll miss passing the water truck and looking up and see Don with pipe in his mouth, a little grin and a little wave...
He will be deeply missed...

Thanks for the news Brian.

Another huge personality on the hill has gone on to his rest. I know he has been ill for some years.

I remember Don's semi coming in loaded to the max with tractors and gators. If memory serves me correctly, he had a 5020 John Deere he would bring, and he pulled a lot of cars out of muddy parking areas with it.

One such evening, a friend of mine came in with a 35' 5th wheel, and was going to park at Rollag Implement to avoid our muddy stubble fields. My friend Paul promptly sunk into the sod at the implement dealer... all the way to the axles on his camper... a rather expensive camper! I got on the radio and called Don, and he shot right over with his 5020 and surveyed the situation. There was no place to tie on the front of Paul's Dodge, so Don decided we would pull him out backwards, tieing on the reciever hitch on the back of Paul's camper. Paul was a little concerned and was not sure how it was going to go, but Don told him just to get into the truck, put it in reverse, and "follow me"! Don took off, and I will never forget the look on Pauls face trying to keep the truck in a straight line with the 35' camper!

Of course, Don got him out. Paul was really greatful, and tried to give Don something for coming over, but Don would have nothing of it. He was 100% Rollag... everything for the show.

Don will be missed by many. Rest in peace my friend!

(Brian... if you have his families address, and names... they would be appreciated so we can send condolences.)

Here is a typical picture of Don when he was not in the Campground - he loved eating an ice cream cone and listening to music. Here is a picture I found from the musiconthehill.net website of Don (on the right) listening to Betty Waszut playing the accordian. Many nights during the show I would find Don in the Nelson Building late in the evening after spending all day in the campgound parking campers and he would fall asleep listening to music. I would wake him up - we would visit for awhile - he would have another ice cream cone and walk the campground to see that everything was ok and then he finally went to bed.
Another thing about Don was that he was a great PR man for Rollag. I swear that some years he would have 1/2 of Wisconsin in the campground and if he didn't invite them he would know them before they left. I think he had supper with different people in the campground everynight.
In all the years working with him I don't think anybody left the campground after the show and didn't have a smile on there face..
Wow... he will be missed..

Don Tesker

The history of time teaches mankind that an individual arises from the core of existance that will travel thru the spectrum of time. Leaving a legacy that others will want to emulate and follow. An entity so profound that one would want to copy. At the final drama would ,without hesitation say, "There went a good man."

This is the epitaph of Don Tesker.
He was an icon of diverse talents.A true artist of steel, a lexicon of imagination, a musician himself and a connosiseur of music. A deep thinker ,gifted with unlimited
intellect and unending wisdom. One eager to help his neighbor or a stranger. Someone that would be treasured indeed to have been included as friend. Not only was Don a rare example of men but a GIANT among men. Don's quiet manner and friendly demeanor will forever be remembered by his friends.

Don is gone in body but will never be absent from his friends. He leaves a fire within our hearts that will never go out. A desire to sometime cross that final abyss and along with many others saying, "So Good to see you friend."

Don Tester will be Missed

Even though Don was not in the Visiter campground for a couple of year now, we miss seeing him either taking wonderful care of the visiters campground , or watering the roads all over Rollag, he is missed by all of us, we did not know him by name for years just the guy with the pipe at Rollag, we knew he was the guy you wanted to see if you needed a pull out of the Stubble field, he was always right there when we needed a pull, it is great that the visiters campground was named Testerville in memory to Don, Amy Kalthoff did such a great job on making the Testerville sign at the entrance to visitors campground, thanks Amy........................................................................................................................................
