Stanford Grothe, age 81, a resident of Hawley, MN, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.

Stanford Dale Grothe was born in Fort Ransom, North Dakota on June 4th, 1935.

He was the third son of Theodore and Annie (Carlblom) Grothe. Stan attended and graduated from Fort Ransom public school. After High School he attended Valley City State College for one year and received a rural school teaching certificate. He taught for two years in a school near Fort Ransom. He returned to Valley City State College and completed a Standard teaching certificate. With the "Standard" in hand he moved to Hawley, MN and took a job teaching 5th grade. He stayed in that position for 30 plus years. During those first years of teaching, he attended summer sessions and night classes to complete a BA in education from Moorhead State University. He lived the rest of his life in Hawley and was very proud of "Hawley Wood."

In addition to his teaching career, Stan was a cofounder and operator of Royal Oak Ski Resort in Rollag, MN. He co-owned HI 10 Sports Center for a period of time, drove truck and worked with various farmers.

Stan's greatest love, especially in later years, was the famous Rollag Thresherman's Reunion. He served on the board of directors for many years, served 2 terms as president, and functioned as the guy who knew where everything was stored. After he retired from teaching, he spent all of his summers living in his trailer on "Snob Hill" campground on the Thresher's grounds.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Annie Grothe, and his brother Ardell and sister-in-law, Terry.

Stan is survived by his older brother, Kenneth and his wife, Charleen, Lisbon, ND, younger brother Alan and his wife Sandy, Pelican Rapids, MN, and numerous nieces and nephews.
