We're a little slow at getting these posted, but better late than never. This was the 2nd year that we sawed up a complete log into thick planks which are used for projects (clock, tables etc) that are auctioned off up on Main Street during the show. Sorry, we do not remember the gentleman's name that does this beautiful work. If anyone remembers his name, please post it here to give him credit.

Brian and I are sizing up the log to make sure we don't mess up on sawing this log into planks.

The widest plank we can get through the blade is 25 1/4 inches, so we had to finish the cut with the chainsaw.

Josh is just trimming up a couple spots so that the log would lay flat when we turned it. Many of these logs were 34" and 35" in diameter.

End view of the log as we're cutting the 3" planks.

3" thick, 25" wide and over 8' long wet cottonwood is extremely heavy. The log we cut produced 7 of these planks.

It looks like Josh found someone to do the heavy work for him. Later in this thread, we will post what is coming for next year so these guys don't have to work so hard turning the logs.

Early Monday evening, this is what it looked like at the sawmill. We were very thankful that the show was over before this happened!

Nice pictures Clayton and Jane...

So, someone is going to make some furniture, etc. out of cottonwood? Wouldn't some other wood be a better choice? I guess I don't know my woods!

Remember the clock that Jim bid on and got for Lynette? That was made out of wood we cut a couple yrs ago. The guy likes the big heavy bark on the cottonwood.

I remember it well. I had no idea it was cottonwood! It's very nice!

Hi Clayton and Jane,

Thanks for positng the summer time pictures. The temperapture is above freezing right now, but the summer picutes sure do look good.

I am looking forward to the next batch of furniture that gets made. The past items are very nice.

Later,
Jerry Christiansen

We got the name of the gentleman who makes the wood projects for WMSTR. His name is Mike Halverson and he is the postmaster in Merrifield, MN. Below is a picture of the table that he donated this past year. He does a great job!

Thanks to our niece, Amy Misener, for providing the name and the picture!

35 inch logs! Are you bragging-or complaining? If you're having trouble next year, bring them down to the B-R Sawmill (the guys with BIG logs) and we could
whittle them down a little for you. Nice custom cutting if you can get it, though. Keep up the good work. -John

No complaining here John. We are planning an addition for turning the logs though, so the people that have to turn these big logs will not injure their bodies.

Having trouble finding my photos of the repairs I've been making to the newly purchased log turner for the sawmill. Below is a picture of the log turner as it looked when we got it home. I have since replaced some worn out bearings and straightened out some iron. For the hydraulics, I will be using a hydraulic pump that I took off of an old truck. The log turner has a single handle joystick control.

So I am hoping for an early spring so that I can get busy fabricating, mounting and assembling this new tool. I hope to have it up and running for Steam School weekend.
